Design Thinking about Entromorphy

Enteromorpha is a fast reproductive algae. In order to prevent families from suffering from the outbreak of Enteromorpha, I design a series of products. Enteromorpha Harvester can timely and efficiently collect Enteromorpha in small size water area. Household Composter can compost organic wastes with Enteromorpha collected, and produce solid fertilizer and soilless culture nutrient solution. Soilless Culture Module can be freely combined into soilless culture appliance, and apply nutrient solution produced by Family Composter to it. Besides, I introduce the concept of future eco-life. I connect nutrient solution network to family electric grid, so that plants can receive nutrition from sockets and appliance’s ports.


Since mid-June 2008, a large number of Enteromorpha prolifera drifted from the middle of the Yellow Sea to the waters near Qingdao. Qingdao coastal waters and the coast suffered a sudden and rare Enteromorpha prolifera disaster.
In July 2011, a large area of Enteromorpha prolifera entered Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai, Rizhao and other coastal waters of Shandong Province. Some beaches were accumulated a thick Enteromorpha prolifera, which seems like the prairie. The coastal culture and tourism industry were adversely affected.
Affected by ocean currents and wind direction, the largest wave of Enteromorpha prolifera floated to Qingdao from July 2, 2013.

The Cause of Outbreak of Enteromorpha

From 1990 to 2010, the world’s carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxides, fluoride and other greenhouse gas emissions. The histogram shows that gas emissions are increasing in every day.The world’s oceans began to change from 1880 and the surface temperature gradually increased from the 20th century. From 1901 to 2015, it increased by 0.13 ° F per decade. The proliferation of Enteromorpha prolifera is related to the greenhouse temperature. The global warming makes the sea-level temperature rise. It will up to 20℃ in summer, which is suitable for the proliferation of Enteromorpha prolifera.

The Existing Collection of Enteromorpha

The existing Enteromorpha prolifera collectors mainly refer to the large-scale civil harvesters that purchased by the government. The working process is: firstly, pulling Enteromorpha prolifera to the conveyor belt. Then, delivering them to the rowing mouth and they are crossly laid on the floor of the storage.
The advantage of this large-scale harvester is that it can operate in large areas. It is able to effectively response to a sudden outbreak of Enteromorpha prolifera.
The disadvantage is that it is easy to be stranded near the seashore. Besides, this large-scale machine is unnecessary when dealing with a small-scale outbreak of Enteromorpha prolifera, because it may cause energy waste.

Marine Culture

There are some coastal economic activities of the fishermen in addition to fishing. That is fish farming on the sea. The fishermen will fence a stretch of ocean with floating boards. They hang fishing nets in depth and breed various kinds of fishes. This approach is prevail in the coastal areas. However, when the Enteromorpha prolifera breaks, it is difficult for fishermen to clean up the Enteromorpha prolifera within the aquaculture area, resulting in the dead of fish for lacking of hypoxia and seriously damaging the economic benefits of the farmers.
Therefore, the idea of domestic-oriented and small-scale Enteromorpha prolifera harvester came into being. Supposing that the specifications of the fish pond are 10 m×10 m and the ponds are connected to each other to form a stable offshore platform. The harvester is put into the waters to detect and collect the Enteromorpha prolifera.

From the results of the evaluation, it can be seen that the EM composting method is the highest in many ways, but its fermentation rate is the lowest. However, in terms of the household use scenarios, the slower fermentation rates are not a major problem because the size of the family cultivation is very small and it does not require much fertilizer. To sum up, I think the EM composting is a suitable method for the fermentation of household organic matter.

This informations inspired me. And I decided to design a compost bucket that could automatically prepare nutrient solutions and a modular soilless cultivation device that could be freely combined.


Composting device allows people to collect the Enteromorpha or the kitchen waste and turn them to high-quality fertilizer. Besides, it can also produce nutrient solution for solution culture.

Energy plugs, sockets and plug-in board are added based on the traditional interfaces: 1. inlet 2. nutrient mouth 3. drainage. They can ensure the electrical power supply and supply necessary water and nutrients for plants at the same time.

The triangle arrangement of the plug is evolved for three times and the final form can effectively avoid plugging adversely.


The kitchen is the place where the composting machine is located and it is also the energy center of the family plants. It can supply necessary nutrients and energy to plants and electrical appliances.


Water, nutrient solution and electricity lines are laid under the floor and in the wall, which can provide different types of energy for electrical appliances and plants. It can also purify the indoor air and save energy.
